Tim Paine M.A.

Tim the registrar and is responsible for the continuing development of courses and training. He was the founder of the Academy of Sports Therapy in 1994 and has more than 12 years experience in developing and teaching sports therapy courses. He holds a Masters Degree in Sports Therapy Training and is a Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Luton. Tim is author of The Complete Guide to Sports Massage and has worked with many sportspeople, in particular the players at Finchley R.F.C.

Peter Sheard B.A. (Hons), P.G.Dip.

Peter is a Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Luton. He is a member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and the SportsCoach UK/National Coaching Foundation (NCF.)

Peter has considerable personal experience in endurance sports as both an athlete (completing over 190 events including IronMan (Hawaii) World Triathlon Championships and Gatineau 55 World Loppet X-C Ski Marathon) and as a coach (supporting national and/or international medallists in triathlon, freediving, x-c skiing, biathlon, mountain biking and paddling).

His former occupation as a professional coach included High Performance Coach appointments with (Canadian) Provincial Sport Governing Bodies. He continues his professional development in the UK with research towards an MSc in Exercise Science (Physiology) and an MA in Science Communication.

In conjunction with his recent appointment to the British Triathlon Association as a World Class Development Coach, Peter is extending his National Coaching Certification Program (Canada) qualifications with National Governing Body coaching awards in cycling (BCF Level II), triathlon (BTA Level III) and swimming (ASA Level IV).

Peter sat on the Technical Sub-committee for the Sports Massage Association (UK) developing the ‘National Curriculum’ and ‘Scope of Practice’ to be made effective throughout the UK in January 2002. With Diabetes UK, he sits on the Sports Experts Panel as Sports Injuries Consultant. He contributes regularly to educational and consumer sports publications.

Tim Edbrooke BEd(Hons); GradDipPhys;MCSP;SRP

Tim is a chartered physiotherapist working for the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary, and in private practice dealing mainly with athletes from club to elite level. He is honorary physiotherapist to the British Triathlon Association, and is a regional physio for UK:Athletics. He regularly travels with both the GB triathlon team, and GB athletics squads.

Anita Bean BSc

Anita is one of the UK’s most respected sports nutritionists and authors. An accomplished sportsperson, she was voted Fitness Professional of the Year (1999) and received Exercise England’s Award for Special Achievement (1995). She is a regular presenter, broadcaster and contributor to many health magazines. Anita is the author of four best-selling books, including The Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition, The Complete Guide to Strength Training and Food For Fitness.

John Jackson

John is a supervisory officer and fitness adviser for Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service. He qualified as a Health & Fitness Adviser with H.M.Prison Service. He is a certified manual handling trainer and holds qualifications in sports massage, sports injuries and Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH). He currently runs a busy sports injury clinic within the Fire Service and has gained a teaching award in Sports Massage.

Dr Liz Elliott

Liz has completed several sports therapy courses and now treats a variety of clients whilst also acting as advisor and tutor for Sports Therapy UK. She has teaching experience with A level biology students and more recently has completed a tutor training course in sports massage therapy. Liz used to work as a cancer research scientist specialising on the digestive tract.

Nikki Walker BSc (Hons) Osteopathy

Nikki is a registered Osteopath, working from her own practice on the North London / Hertfordshire border, and runs a weekly sports injury clinic where she treats mainly runners, racquet sport players and cyclists. Nikki provides tuition on back care as part of our Diploma Course in Sports Injuries.

Gary Anderson MSF MAB Phys

Gary has been involved in sport for many years, particularly rugby, and volleyball where he gained international honours. He was a trained medical surgical attendant with the Royal Navy, physiotherapist at Barnet Football Club for three years and now holds the position of Head of Sports Science at Barnet College we he has also set up a sporting Centre of Excellence for athletics. Gary lectures on the Institute Diploma course in Electrotherapy.


Tristan Hughes R.E.M.T., Cert.Ed., ALS, PALS, NLS.

Tristan currently holds post as the Resuscitation Officer at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore. Prior to this he achieved the status of Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider (Cardiac Arrest Team member/leader) and more recently has been selected as a Resuscitation Council UK ALS & Paediatric ALS Instructor. Tristan was originally trained as a military medic and then served 11 years with the London Ambulance service. He also holds various teaching qualifications and is currently undertaking his Masters in Education and finalising his honours in Human Physiology.
